What price privacy?

Consumers are worried about the safety of their personal information and how it is being used – and rightly so.

When Europe's new privacy rules come into force across Europe by 2016, there will be far reaching consequences for businesses and consumers. EU residents will win the right to be forgotten and to demand that all copies of data companies hold on them be deleted. There will be compliance costs and hefty fines for security breaches, but there will be winners too. A digital single market will be created across Europe, and consumers will be able to dictate how their personal data is used. New markets will open up for personal information management services and brokers, as well as secure identities in cyberspace.

At a time of declining trust in financial services, new BT research has revealed that it is their bank consumers most trust to be the custodian of a single strong verification of their cyberidentity. Could the new rules offer a chance to rekindle trust and build loyalty?
